In July 2002, the Additional Director General Headquarter (West) established and was assigned with the duties and responsibilities, as under: -
a) To supervise the work of IsG of Kashmir, Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan & Gujarat Ftr.
b) To maintain close liaison with the DGP of the States and other Govt authorities in their area of jurisdiction.
c) To maintain close co-operation with their counter-parts in CPOs and Army authorities in their Jurisdiction.
d) To formulate field related operational doctrines for frontiers under Command.
e) Co-ordination among Frontiers for collection and dissemination of intelligence.
f) Co-ordination among Ftrs under Command for optimum utilisation of resources including man and material.
g) Inspection of Ftr HQrs and other attached formations.
h) To exercise the financial, adm and other powers delegated from time to time. The establishment of these HQrs changed the existing command structure from four to five tiers, i.e., Bn to Sector, Sector to Ftr, Ftr to Addl DG HQ and Addl Dg HQ to Directorate General. The post of Addl DG was subsequently upgraded to the rank of Special DG on 6th Oct 2008. The terminology was changed to Spl DG eastern Command & Western Command.
